Tawdra Kandle is a dear friend of mine and an amazing author. I want to thank her for stopping over today and being a Featured Florida Author.
Tawdra Kandle writes romance, in just about all its forms. She loves unlikely pairings, strong women, sexy guys, hot love scenes and just enough conflict to make it interesting. Her books run from YA paranormal romance (THE KING SERIES), through NA paranormal and contemporary romance (THE SERENDIPITY DUET, PERFECT DISH DUO, THE ONE TRILOGY) to adult contemporary and paramystery romance (CRYSTAL COVE BOOKS and RECIPE FOR DEATH SERIES). She lives in central Florida with a husband, kids, sweet pup and too many cats. And yeah, she rocks purple hair.
|How long have you lived in Florida?
I’ve lived in Florida for over seven years now. Wow! That doesn’t seem possible. I still feel like a transplant.
Has Florida inspired any of your books?
Seven of my books are at least partially set in Florida, but I wouldn’t say the state has inspired any yet. But someday soon, perhaps. . .
How long have you been writing and how many books do you have out?
I’ve been writing for freaking ever, as I tell my kids. . .published for three years. I have eleven books out, plus two shorts.
Tell us about your newest release.
THE LAST ONE is a spin-off of THE POSSE. I really intended to write more about Jude’s friends first, but Meghan’s story began to tug at me. . .Meghan is Jude’s daughter. She’s been through a rough time, with her father’s illness and death, her brother’s abrupt fatherhood and marriage and her mother’s remarriage to a close family friend. At the end of her junior year of college, Meghan is at loose ends. She decides to volunteer with a program that places art students in under-served communities, teaching children who otherwise wouldn’t get any exposure to the arts. She’s assigned to live with a family. . .and it turns out she has some history with Sam, whose farm is her home for the summer. After a bumpy start, they decide to enjoy a strings-free relationship, which sounds like a great idea. . .until they both realize what’s between is more than just casual fun.
How many more do you have planned for this next year? What is next?
I have two more releases for 2014: DEATH FRICASSEE, the first book in my Recipe for Death series (Adult Paramystery) and I CHOOSE YOU, the third (bonus!) book in the Perfect Dish Duo. It’s the wedding book, at the request of fabulous readers. In 2015, I’ll release the last two ONE books (THE FIRST ONE and THE ONLY ONE), at least one more Recipe for Death book, a historical romance and possibly a Rafe and Nell book.
Who/ What inspired Sam? (and tell us a little bit about him.)
Sam is a guy who had a load of responsibility dumped on him at a young age. His parents were killed right before his high school graduation, and he had to decide how to deal with both his fourteen-year old sister and the family farm. He chose to take the hard road, raising his little sister and struggling to hold together their farm. But all that came at a price: by the beginning of THE LAST ONE, Sam has become old before his time, stuck in his ways and intent on working hard, all the time. When he meets Meghan, he immediately fights his attraction to her by being, as she says, a grump. The last thing he needs is this young party girl. . .or so he thinks.
What about Meghan?
Meghan has a cartload of baggage as well. She was a daddy’s girl who grew up on the beach in Florida, hanging out at her family’s restaurant in their small hometown. Her father was diagnosed with cancer right after she went away to college in Georgia, and he passed away during her sophomore year. Meghan was still struggling with her grief when her brother found out that his college girlfriend had had his baby. And when Meghan came home to meet her nephew, she discovered that her mother was falling in love with a long-time family friend. Her reaction was a little bit of spoiled brat, and even though she came around, by the beginning of THE LAST ONE, she’s still dealing with the fallout. Meghan’s been dating a lot of guys at school, but never for very long; she’s getting a rep as a love-’em-and-leave-’em kind of girl. Feeling more than a little lost, she’s hoping this summer with ArtCorps will be a welcome break from her life. But Sam proves to be a pretty big complication, one she didn’t expect.
Why did you pick Georgia for the setting of The Last One?
I really didn’t. In THE POSSE, we learn that Meghan is in school in Savannah. It’s a city that is near and dear to my heart, and I visit as often as I can. Because of how the plot rolls out, Sam had to live somewhere nearby, and thus all of THE ONE books will be primarily set in the small Georgia town of Burton.
Playlist please! Did you listen to any country when you wrote this? 😉
I listened to nothing BUT country! I have eclectic music taste, and I’d drifted away from my country favorites for a while. But it was clear that THE ONE Trilogy will be heavily country. And when I heard the song Beat This Summer from Brad Paisley’s Wheelhouse, I knew I’d found the theme song for Meghan and Sam’s book.

The anticipated spin-off series of THE POSSE is finally here!
Meghan Hawthorne is restless. The last year has been a roller coaster: her widowed mother just married a long-time family friend. Her younger brother unexpectedly became a father and a husband. Everyone’s life is changing. . .except for hers. As she begins her final summer of college, Meghan’s looking for excitement and maybe a little romance. Nothing serious; this girl just wants to have fun.
But the only man for Meghan turns out to be the last one she expects.
Sam Reynolds doesn’t need excitement, and he doesn’t want romance. Fun is out of the question. He’s been the steady, responsible one since his parents were killed, and serious is his way of life.
When Sam rescues Meghan alongside a dark Georgia backroad, she falls hard for his deep brown eyes and slow drawl. But making him see her as more than just a party girl won’t be easy. Sam’s tempted by the fiery young artist, even as he realizes that giving into his feelings will mean radical change. . .maybe more than he can handle.
Nobody ever said love was simple.
“As an almost strictly paranormal romance reader, it takes a certain type of author to convince me to dive into straight romance. Tawdra Kandle is one of the few authors I will make an exception for. Her writing style is so easy and relaxing that I have to really keep an eye on the time or I’ll stay up all night to finish one of her books.” Carrie Williams, Goodreads Reviewer
“Wow. Talk about romance with an edge. From the beginning the characters were so real that I was completely invested in them. The sexual tension woven into the story added so much value to the relationships. I will be reading this book many times just so I can spend more time with Meghan and Sam.” Cheryl Garrett, Goodreads Reviewer
“I’m in love with this book!!” Leah Fennick, Goodreads Reviewer
