The call we had always feared finally came today. My grandmother is in the hospital with a broken hip. If it were not for the medical emergency reporting system we installed for her a couple of months ago, we might not have found her in time.
It has been a hard year for all of us. Grandpapa died at the end of 2010. He had been sick a long time and Grandma had cared for him for many years. The transition to living alone, without the love of her life, has been difficult.
I always think of Grandma as an independent free spirit. She had a million friends when I was growing up and as many volunteer jobs. She was always taking care of others. When Grandpapa got sick she left her “work” to care for him. After he died, she never returned to doing the things that had kept her active.
We talked endlessly with her about moving to a community where she would be well cared for but she wouldn’t hear of it. She didn’t want to leave the home they had worked their whole lives for and we couldn’t take it from her.
We settled on a medical emergency reporting system that she could wear at home to contact help if she needed it. Although we hoped it would never come to that, that system saved her life. There is no way to know how long she would have been lying there in pain without her pendant.
We are not sure what the next steps are for Grandma but I do know I can’t express how grateful I am for this service. She is still with us and being cared for and that is what matters most.
I am so glad to hear that the system worked for your Grandmother…I see them on TV and always wondered how reliable they are. I am sending positive thoughts for your Grandmother.
I am glad she is ok and that the system worked for her, when i was 5 we moved from where we lived and we came to where my grandpa lived and we had to deal with a lot of horrible things he would fall and get bruises all over him it was hard to see at 5 years old, and we had to help him a lot. I wish we had something like that for him back then.
I am glad to hear that your Grandmother is doing good and the system worked for her, i have wondered if they were reliable!!!
My dad broke his hip in 2009, and we had people help him for quite awhile. It is so hard to take care of the elderly when they have a lot of health issues. I think it is best to have help!
