They stopped in front of an old ranch-style house. All the windows were boarded up, and flickering light could be seen through the cracks.

“They don’t have power anymore. The magical interference inhibits the flow of electricity. That’s half the reason we had to come tonight.”

“What’s the other reason?” Ezzie asked

“Sue Ellen is about to give birth. They cannot leave the house, nor can anyone get in.”

Ezzie’s eyes widened. She couldn’t imagine having a baby amid such turmoil.

Winifred walked to the front of the driveway and instructed Ezzie to hold her hands. The crackle of magic could be felt all around them. It had a dark oppressive feel and smelled of mold and mildew.

“Does all black magic smell like this?”

Winifred glanced at Ezzie quickly. “You smell it?”

“Yes, don’t you?”

“I do. But most witches your age would not smell it. Seems as though your magic might be manifesting its calling sooner than I thought it would. We’ll worry about that later, though. We need to counteract the spell on the house.”

They raised their joined hands skyward and began to chant the spell. Ezzie could feel the resistance of the other spell pushing against her like invisible hands.

“Keep going, Ezzie. Don't let it win.”

They chanted louder, pushing their power out through their fingertips in a spray of red sparks.

“We’re almost through now. One final push and we should get in.”

Ezzie concentrated on the words and the feeling of her power surging through her body to her fingertips. She willed the invisible barrier to break. She visualized cracks forming and saw her magic flowing through. When she opened her eyes, her grandmother was staring at her.

“What?”

“That was wonderful, my darling. Now we need to cast the spell on the rest of the house.”

“Can we cast it on the people as well?”

Winifred shook her head. “I have brought along some charms for them until a more permanent solution can be found. Come, let’s go and finish this. They must be so nervous in there.

Ezzie followed her grandmother up the driveway to the house. Winifred knocked on the door, and they waited a moment before a tall, thin man with blond hair and green eyes opened it.

“Winifred, thank goodness you came. Sue Ellen wouldn’t have made it another night in the house. Her water broke four hours ago.”

The woman in question appeared behind her husband, her brown hair plastered to her forehead. “Alan, we need to go, and we need to go now.” She clutched at his arm as a contraction made her double over in pain.

Winifred laid her hands over Sue Ellen’s stomach until a soft gold glow appeared and covered the entire thing. “Go now, we’ll take care of things here. You should be ok until you get to the hospital, don’t worry.” She kissed Sue Ellen’s cheeks, and Alan hurried them into their car.

“What did you do for her with your hands?” Ezzie asked

“I bought her some time. The baby would have come otherwise. Now they’ll make it to the hospital before the little one arrives. Come, let’s finish this so we can get home for dinner.”

It was much easier to cast the spell in the house. There was no barrier to push through. They finished in less than fifteen minutes and were back in the car on the way back to Winifred’s house.

  1. Yeppers, I must have been around 14-15. I was sitting in our den and half an outline of a person walked by right in front of me. Nearly had a heart attack. Ran and jumped into bed with my sister lol
