Consistency: the word that makes so many parents sigh! Nobody is consistent 100% of the time, and that’s okay. Aiming for “most of the time” is realistic, and it makes parenting easier in the long run. Here’s why it matters and how to do it.
Why consistency matters
When kids know what to expect, and know you mean what you say, they feel more secure and test the limits less. Consistency also saves you energy, because you aren’t making up a new consequence every time.
- Plan ahead. Decide on a few clear expectations (like screen time, bedtime and chores) and the consequences, before you’re in the heat of the moment.
- Get on the same page. If two parents or caregivers are involved, agree on the rules together, and back each other up in front of the kids.
- Involve your kids. Explain the rules and let them help choose rewards or consequences. Kids follow rules better when they understand them.
- Follow through. If you say screens go off at 7, they go off at 7. Calm, boring follow-through beats yelling.
- Stay flexible. Consistency isn’t rigidity. Special occasions happen. Just explain the exception: “Tonight is special because Grandpa is visiting; tomorrow we’re back to normal bedtime.”
Make it easier on yourself
- Keep the rule list short.
- Post routines and chore charts where everyone can see them.
- Pick your battles.
- When you slip up, start fresh the next day.
