We love peanut butter in this house. I like creamy, my husband and son like crunchy. So we always have lots of peanut butter around here. But awhile ago my year old asked how they make peanut butter. I told him it was actually pretty easy. Just put a few things in the food processor, let it grind until smooth, and you are done. He didn’t believe me!
I tried to explain to him that his dad and I actually made peanut butter years ago, before he was born. Still, he didn’t believe me. My husband even backed me up, but still, he didn’t believe me! Maybe it is just me, but if someone doesn’t believe me, even my 7 year old, I will do pretty much anything to prove that I am right. A trait I get from my dad, I think.
So off to Costco we went to get a GIANT container of peanuts. I pretty much let my son do all the work for this, that is how easy it is! He weighed the peanuts, measured the ingredients, and turned on the food processor. In less than 10 minutes we had peanut butter, and he was eating toast. He was pretty impressed, and I was back to being the mom who can do everything.
After it was done we threw in a handful of peanuts and lightly processed them so he could have his crunchy peanut butter. It is pretty liquidity from the heat of the food processor. Store it in the fridge, and it firms up quickly.

Homemade Peanut Butter
Adapted from Food Network
15 oz roasted peanuts
3 Tbls honey
1 1/2 Tbls peanut oil
1 tsp salt (omit if peanuts have salt on them)
Put the peanuts, honey, and salt if using into the off processor. Turn on and let run for about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides. Turn back on, and slowly drizzle in the peanut oil. Let it run for 2-3 minutes, or until smooth. Store in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 2 months.
Note: For crunchy peanut butter add in 1/4 – 1/3 cup roasted peanuts during the last 15-30 seconds of processing.
What is the price comparison of bought vs made?
Erin made this but I make mine too. I costs be around $.50 for jar and it doesn’t have the preservatives and sugar. I usually add raw honey to the sandwich which makes it more expensive but well worth it.
for YEARS i worked for GNC (general nutrition center). we made fresh ground peanut butter on demand for our customers. the ingredients—–dry roasted peanuts. if you wanted sweetened or salted you were out of luck. we made real honest to God peanut butter. i;m sorry but, why add sugar (and yes honey is sugar) if you don’t have too!
Because my children like raw honey. They don’t always eat it but they get it as a treat. We don’t eat jelly or jam.
This homemade peanut butter looks fantastic! I can’t wait to try this! Thanks for sharing your recipe!
My daughter loves honey and peanut butter. You can also use almonds for this if peanuts are a concern.
