4 Ways to Get Housework Done Quickly

4 Ways to Get Housework Done Quickly

Few of us love housework, but most of us do want to live in a house where we don't have to fear catching a communicable disease. So let's figure out how to clean faster, so we can spend time on the things that we really care about! Here are 4 Ways to Get Housework Done Quickly.

Plan Your Meals

When you don't know what you're going to make for dinner ahead of time, you may end up with too much to do-including running to the grocery store-at the last minute. And there's no worse place to be at 5:30 p.m. than standing in line at a grocery store with three whiny children because you put the spaghetti on only to find you have no sauce. So try to plan your meals for a week. If you like, you can gather your family together and let them each choose one meal. This often increases the chance they'll eat it, too!

Schedule Chores

One of the problems people frequently have with housework is that they concentrate on the “visible” areas, like the living room and kitchen, while other areas rarely get cleaned. Or they mop frequently, but forget to vacuum the upstairs.

And then you find that part of your house is out of control and driving you crazy! If you only dust your bedroom every few months, even though your living room where the guests are is dusted twice weekly, you may start to sneeze all night!

Make a list of how often you want tasks to be done. Ideally, this can be done with your family, and you can ask them to help. But for those tasks which you've allocated to yourself, decide which ones need to be done daily, which ones weekly, which ones every other week, and which ones monthly. Then make a monthly schedule where you can check off the things as you do them. You can download my own charts for that through the link at the bottom of this article!

You'll find several advantages to this system. First, everything that needs to get done will get done. Your house will be well maintained, so your things will last longer. But you may actually end up doing less work. If you do housework according to a schedule, you know that everything will get done in its time. Once you've finished today's tasks, there's nothing else to do. You can stop without feeling guilty about relaxing or spending time on something else.

Clean Faster

Of course, another way to get cleaning done quickly is to, well, do it quickly! Pick up the pace. Here are some fast ‘n furious suggestions:

1. Clean to upbeat, fast music.
2. Time yourself and see if you can beat your previous time.
3. Think about cleaning as exercise. Try to clean so fast that you literally work up a sweat and get out of breath. That way, cleaning will count for one of the 20 minute periods of exercise you're supposed to get each day.

Give Yourself Specific Goals

Has this ever happened to you? You decide to clean your bedroom, and in the process find several things that actually belong in the living room. You gather them up and trudge downstairs, and notice your plants need watering. When you go to the kitchen to return the watering can, you notice the breakfast dishes are still in the sink. You do those, and then realize you're late for picking up your kids from school. You rush out, frustrated because nothing is actually clean.

I do this all the time. It's like I have no attention span when it comes to tidying up. After spending an hour, I'll have a small portion of every room in the house clean, but nothing's actually finished. It feels like I have nothing to show for everything I've done!

When you give yourself a task, make sure you do it and only it. If there's stuff that needs to be moved to another room, make a pile but don't carry it there until you're finished the task at hand. That way you know that at least one room at the end of all your efforts will be tidy.

And isn't that what we all want? We want comfortable homes, but we don't want to spend all our time cleaning them. So let's organize smart, clean smart, and clean fast, and you'll have more time for the relationships that really matter!
