Chasing Hope by Kathryn Cushman
A Personal Drama of Shattered Dreams and Second Chances
A talented runner fully committed to Olympic dreams, Sabrina Rice's future was shattered by a devastating diagnosis. One forfeited scholarship and several years later, she has new goals and dreams that have nothing to do with running–something that's become far too painful to think on.
Until the day she sees Brandy Philip running across the community college campus, easily outpacing security. Sabrina immediately recognizes world-class speed, and it's all the more painful that it belongs to a teenage graffiti artist. When a chance encounter brings the two young women together, Sabrina becomes Brandy's best hope for staying out of juvenile hall. Soon, Sabrina begins to feel an uncomfortable nudge that her new life is just about to be toppled…that God may be calling her to minister to this talented but troubled girl.

Interview –
Is this your first series or have you published before? Â
This is my 7th published book (I use the word “published” because I completed 2 other books which have never been published)
Are you working on anything else?
I'm currently in the first draft of a story about a young woman whose father has just died in a car accident. Upon going through his paperwork, she realizes that the mother and siblings that she had been told had died in a fire over twenty years ago, are still alive. The book is her journey to discover what happened and why. I doesn't have a title yet.
Do you have any advice for authors wanting to publish? (Why did you choose to go indie? If this applies – If not why traditional)
Be willing to accept critique and make changes (even though it can REALLY hurt sometimes), and be persistent. I chose to go traditional publishing for several reasons. One of the main reasons is that when I first began writing there wasn't an e-book option, it was all print. Indie was expensive and I am not a big self-promoter, so it just wasn't feasible for me.
What is your favorite writing snack? Â
Hershey bar with almonds.
What gets you in the mood to write?Â
I often try to match music to the scene I'm writing.
Who is your favorite character and why?
I like Brandy. She is a tough kid but she's got plenty of reasons for that. She also calls things as she sees them, Â and she has a soft heart buried somewhere under all those layers of self-protection.
Favorite book of all time?Â
Lord of the Rings
What made you want to write this book?
A lot of the medical issues that Sabrina faces are issues my own daughter faces. I wanted to explore “invisible illnesses” and how they affect people in ways that most people around them never know or see.
I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?Â
Cold pizza. What does that say about me? 🙂
Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live? Â
I'm a contemporary girl. I don't read a lot of historical fiction, and I enjoy modern conveniences way too much to go back in time. If I could go back to 1700's Scotland with indoor plumbing, heating and air-conditioning, then I'd want to go. 🙂
Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!Â
It is a quick and entertaining read, but it will (hopefully) leave you thinking about some deeper issues long after you have put the book aside.
