It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also the busiest. Between parties, shopping, travel and family gatherings, the first things to go are usually our own healthy habits. They don’t have to! These simple ideas help you enjoy the treats and the fun while still feeling good. (This post combines two older posts, including tips from a former guest writer.)
A quick note: I’m a mom, not a doctor. This post is general information, not medical advice. Please talk with your doctor before starting a new supplement or routine, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, have a health condition or take medication.
Enjoy the food, mindfully
- Take small portions of a few favorites instead of a big pile of everything.
- Fill half your plate with veggies and salad first.
- Eat a healthy snack before a party so you don’t arrive starving.
- Alternate drinks with water, especially if you’re having eggnog, wine or cocktails.
- Team up: bring a lighter dish to share, or find a friend or family member with the same goals.
Plan ahead
- Stock the freezer. Cook a few meals in early December so busy nights are easy.
- Set a gift budget and stick to it. Homemade cookies make lovely gifts for neighbors and teachers.
- Choose your events. You don’t have to say yes to everything. Leave breathing room between gatherings, especially if you’re traveling.
Keep moving
- Walk the mall once before you shop.
- Take the stairs and park farther away.
- Start a family walk after the big meal.
- Go caroling, sledding, or for a walk to look at Christmas lights.
Take care of you
- Keep your daily rituals. If you do yoga or enjoy quiet coffee every morning, keep doing it.
- Get enough sleep. Tired people make stressed, snacky choices.
- Let go of perfect. The house can be a little cluttered and dinner can be a little late. Focus on the people.
If you overdo it
You’re human! One big meal won’t undo your progress. Just get back to your normal routine the next day, and don’t skip meals to make up for it.
